Sculptures at Greenham Business Park

sculptures

Greenham Common Trust has invested in several high profile sculptures all produced by some of the world’s most renowned sculptors to make the business park more attractive for tenants, staff and visitors.

Changes - the winning design of Greenham Common Trust’s international sculpture competition takes pride of place at the main entrance to the business park. Created by Icelandic sculptor Gudrun Nielsen, Changes represents the transformation of the Greenham Common from a military and nuclear airbase back to common land and the creation of an award winning sustainable business park which creates a charitable income for the local community. Broken Symmetry – The first part of the international sculpture competition commissioned to the British Society of Sculptors by the Trust and produced by internationally acclaimed sculptor the late Michael Kenny. His work which frames the entrance to the park’s Enterprise Centre – a hub for local start up companies which fosters innovation is evocative of the metamorphosis that has been undertaken at Grenham Common. Sadly he did not live to see his sculpture erected but his friend Beatles drummer Ringo Starr officially unveiled the work in 2000. (Click here to find out more about Broken Symmetry).

Welcome Figure – Johannes von Stumm was commissioned by Greenham Common Trust to create a figure to welcome visitors and staff to the Slater Centre – Greenham Common Trust’s purpose built centre for local charities at New Greenham Park. Johannes von Stumm was born in Germany, but now resides in Fawley, near Wantage. He is currently President of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and is best known locally for his public art ‘Couple in Conversation’ on the Robin Hood Roundabout in Newbury. Chapungu – The Trust has recently agreed to store some of the fascinating and thought provoking South African Chapungu sculptures in return for a collection being temporarily exhibited around the business park.
Founded by Roy Guthrie, as African Art Promotions Inc. in 1970, Chapungu Sculpture Park has pioneered the promotion of Zimbabwe Stone Sculpture (Shona Sculpture) and has built up the most important permanent collection of this work in existence. From its humble beginnings as a small gallery in the capital city, Harare, to the 20-acre sculpture park in the outskirts of Harare, and now to its North American location, Chapungu is some of the most expressive and powerful sculpture in the world.
