Greenham Common Trust conferred with the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development 2003

The Queen's Award Office has announced that the charity, Greenham Common Trust, has been conferred with The Queen's Award For Enterprise: Sustainable Development, for its work regenerating the former Greenham Common airbase, Newbury, as a sustainable business park.

New Greenham Park is the first commercial property development ever to have attained a Queen's Award for sustainability.

Since its creation in 1997 the Trust has enabled the restoration of 750-acres of Greenham Common and has transformed 150-acres of the former airbase into a mixed-use business campus, that is now producing an income that is distributed to good causes and social projects through annual charitable awards.

Sir Peter Michael, Chairman of the Greenham Common Trust says: "When the Trust was formed in 1997, we had a bold vision of managing a business park in an innovative and exciting manner that would enable it to add to the wealth and prosperity of the wider community. This vision has been justified and we believe that New Greenham Park now provides a blue print for sustainable urban regeneration. Receiving the Queen's Award is a tremendous honour and recognition of all that the Trust, our supporters and staff have achieved over the last six years."

Stuart Tagg, the Trust's Chief Executive adds: "Since our formation, the Trust has had two main aims. Firstly we wanted to transform the redundant and decaying nuclear airbase into a modern business park, that would help sustain local social projects and charities, encourage innovative industry and provide diverse employment opportunities in a pleasant, safe and accessible environment. Secondly we wished to enable the restoration of several hundred acres of Greenham Common to lowland heathland, creating and protecting a natural resource."
