Following a public vote by readers of the Newbury Weekly News, Greenham Common Trust has announced the four organisations and projects that have been shortlisted to make a presentation to members of the public at the Newbury Corn Exchange on Tuesday the 6th June as part of the Greenham Gift 2006.

The members of the public attending the event will be asked to vote for the project they feel is most deserving and the winner will be awarded a cheque for £50,000. The three other short listed projects will be awarded £8,000 each along with a further project selected, by the public audience, from the list of projects that did not make the original shortlist.

The four shortlisted projects are:

Alzheimer's Society West Berkshire Branch’s “Singing for the Brain” project, a social and therapeutic activity for Alzheimer's sufferers and their carers in the outlying communities of West Berkshire.

Newbury & District Crossroads Caring for Carers, which aims to assist local carers through the provision of support for those who might be under the strain and stress of caring for a loved one at home.

Newbury Carnival. The re-launched Newbury Carnival’s aim is to help secure its financial footing and help it to become Newbury's premier community event.

West Berkshire Disability Alliance, to allow it to complete the installation of the REACT system in Newbury, Thatcham and Hungerford to enable blind and visually impaired people to orientate themselves independently around the town centres.

Stuart Tagg, chief executive of the Greenham Common Trust, says; “We look forward to the public reaching the final decision on the 6th June at the Corn Exchange.”

The application for tickets to the event was oversubscribed and a draw was undertaken with the help of West Berkshire’s head of legal and electoral services, David Holling. The lucky individuals were drawn at random and will receive their tickets in the near future.

The Trust would ask that if those receiving tickets can no longer attend the event that they return them to Greenham Common Trust so that someone else can benefit from casting their vote on the 6th June.
