Local organisations and projects are set to benefit from a total of £67,000 following the announcement by Greenham Common Trust of its Major Awards for 2005.

The Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust is to receive £37,000 to help keep the air ambulance flying and HomeStart West Berkshire has been granted £20,000 to fund a home visiting scheme.

The Thames Valley Area of the British Red Cross has been granted £10,000 to provide a mobile community response unit, that will provide a medical equipment service in outlying villages and rural areas in West Berkshire and Hampshire.

Glenn Clarkson, chairman of the Greenham Common Trust's Distribution Committee says: “The applications for our major awards were heavily oversubscribed and reaching a decision proved to be a very difficult task.”

Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust's Stevie Horton says: “Quite recently the air ambulance attended an incident on the M4 involving a car and two lorries; the helicopter reached the scene, landed on the motorway and airlifted a lorry driver to Wexham Park Hospital.”

“The crew reached another incident on the A34 (Tothill) in three minutes and airlifted a coach driver. The coach was in collision with a tractor and there were several casualties.”

“28% of all our missions are to the West Berkshire area and this generous donation from Greenham Common Trust will help us to maintain the vital service we provide. We are very grateful for the support.”
