Wash Common Jubilee Park Project wins the £50,000 Greenham Gift

The Wash Common Jubilee Park Project was awarded the £50,000 Greenham Gift at the Newbury Corn Exchange on Tuesday 12 June following a public vote.

Those attending the event were given presentations by all four organisations that had been selected in an earlier vote by readers of the Newbury Weekly News. In addition to the Jubilee Park Project, presentations were given by The Princess Royal Trust Carers Service, The Alzheimer’s Society West Berkshire and Newbury and District Crossroads Caring for Carers.

The mothers behind the Jubilee Park Project have been campaigning for six years to have the aged and neglected children’s play area at Jubilee Park to be upgraded and renovated.

Deborah Wyatt of the Jubilee Park Project said: “Greenham Common Trust has been the only organisation to have recognised our plight. Nobody else would listen.”

“We have been to so many people but being just two mums and not a registered charity or a group with specific needs it has been very hard to get donations or support. Winning the Greenham Gift will allow us to achieve what we set out to do – build a brand new playground for the local children.”

The Princess Royal Trust Carers Service, The Alzheimer’s Society West Berkshire and Newbury and District Crossroads Caring for Carers did not leave empty handed and were each presented with cheques for £8,000 on the night.

A fifth organisation, PALS, also received £8,000 following a further vote by the audience to choose one of the eight organisations that did not make the shortlist of four originally selected by the readers of the Newbury Weekly News.
