Greenham Common Restoration
Acknowledged as one of the most important environmental projects in the South East over recent years, the restoration of Greenham Common and the transformation of the former airbase has received much acclaim since work began in 1997. Whilst winning The Queen’s Award For Enterprise in 2003 is probably the most prestigious honour, the restoration of the Common will receive further acknowledgement in the near future with a visit by a BBC film crew. The BBC’s Natural History Unit from Bristol will be visiting the site during the summer months of 2003 to film part of a new programme to be screened on BBC1 late the following year called "The British Isles Though Time". The 8 part series, featuring the nation’s favourite gardener, Alan Titchmarsh, will look at the evolution of the British landscape and the influence that man has had on shaping his surroundings since prehistoric times. The penultimate episode will look at how we are caring for our landscapes and will use Greenham Common as an example of how brownfield sites can be restored as natural and attractive habitats. "The Trust was established to ensure the future of Greenham Common and we are delighted that the restoration will be used to illustrate that ambitious projects such as this are possible and financially viable" said Stuart Tagg.
