'HER LIGHT IS OFF'
Roza Ilgen

Born in Kurdish Turkey and living between Norway and the UK artist Roza Ilgen has a unique understanding of the relationship between western and middle-eastern cultures. Using human hair as the prominent medium in her sculptural and performance work, Roza questions attitudes to gender, religion and multiculturalism from both perspectives. 'Her Light is Off' was a compelling enquiry into the power of history and tradition and how they impact on the modern life of Muslim women.

This exhibition contained images that some people might have found offensive.

“What separates this exciting installation from other less well thought through peices is that while some work requests that you make up your own mind, 'Her Light is Off' forces you to make decisions about it and that is powerful indeed.”
