'LOVE ME TENDER' Barb Jungr, presented by James Seabright in association with New Greenham Arts
Some of the greatest song writing talents of the fifties, sixties and seventies wrote for the legendary Elvis Presley. Barb Jungr, regarded as Britain's foremost chansonnier and finest song stylist, took these songs and embarked on a journey through love, loneliness, obsession and finally faith. With the accompaniment of Britain's top musicians and stunning arrangements, the songs and their history came together in the present and we heard the lyrics anew. Drawing on Presley's eclectic repertoire, Jungr deconstructed some of his most well known songs as well as his gospel and more obscure repertoire, including the Bob Dylan songs he sang. Jungr's witty interactions with her audiences, dramatic ability and vocal virtuosity have led to comparisions with Piaf, Nina Simone, Bette Midler and Janis Joplin. In her moulding of jazz, European cabaret and humour she is unique.
As I watched and listened with genuine, rapt awe, it dawned on me in one of those spine-tingling realisations that she might just be the best cabaret singer we have got in Britain today. The Stage |
