THE BLUE HOURS Hosted by Barb Jungr
Acclaimed cabarettist Barb Jungr, winner of New York's prestigious Backstage 2003 International Artist of the Year award for cabaret, hosted a new monthly night at New Greenham Arts. Inspired by her successful Café Prague night in Brighton, Barb introduces guests who'll entertain with a wide mix of European cabaret muusic.
The Blue Hours began in March 2004 with Jacques Brel enthusiasts Robb Johnson and Des De Moor. The pair have been championing Brel's work in Britain for the last seven years, and have been at the forefront of translating Brel's work from French to English, as featured on Barb's chanson 'The Space In Between' (Linn Records CD), which was a top ten jazz record of the year in Sunday Times 2000. Robb has been called 'the finest songwriter to emerge from these isles in the last decade' by Rock 'n' Reel. I bought a Brel compliation CD out of curiosity. I was overwhelmed by it; absolutely brilliant. Robb explained, I discovered that I knew a lot of Brel's songs from my teenage years, when they were performed by Bowie. Performer Des de Moor is the prime mover in European cabaret in Britain and pioneered Pirate Jenny's at London's Vortex club, which started in the mid 1990's. |
