'POLAROID SUITCASE' Gary Le Strange
For anyone who lived in the 80s and demanded a refund (a la Jarvis Cocker) or who loved that whole Gary Numan, Spandau Ballet, Kraftwerk, Adam and the Ants thing. London. December 31, 1979. Gary Le Strange is the spearhead of an artistic movement known as the Neo-Regency Face Warriors. They believe in dancing, fashion, cowboys, pirates, robots, harlequins, tower blocks, industrial architecture and Regency dandies. In fact, anything which demonstrates the power of just showing off. Or, if you prefer, he is a throwback to a twilight world between 1979 and 1982. He is, in other words, a New Romantic. 'Polaroid Suitcase' revolved around six songs including: Individuals - a harmonic chant about the grinding oppression of a faceless society. Is My Toaster Sentient? - a synth-rocker about the all-pervasive power of artificial intelligence. Grey - a power ballad about the virtues of the colour grey.
This lovingly written, authentically inauthentic show hardly puts a foot wrong, save the one in Gary's mouth. I'm Japanese, he sings in gloomy cockney. I eat raw fish and I'm allergic to cheese...I laughed a lot. The Independent |
