NEWBURY LOCK WATER SCULPTURE EDUCATION PROJECT Peter Randall-Page and six local schools
This exhibition showed designs, models and sculptures by 14 & 15-year-old students and primary school children, alongside the drawings, plans and models of Newbury lock by international sculptor Peter Randall-Page.
The Newbury lock water sculpture began as part of the town sculpture trail millennium project three years ago, with the theme of 'flow'. Peter's idea for a canal lock-side sculpture was chosen from four sculptors' designs. His huge granite bowl is designed to fill and empty with water with the rise and fall of the lock.
This exhibition was the culmination of education work with six schools, running alongside the making of Peter's piece. Mixed media artist Maureen Riley and Sculptor Simon Cooley visited Woolton Hill junior school, St Nicholas junior school and Dunstan Park infants school to inspire the children to create sculptures for their school sites. Later in 2002, Simon Cooley took workshops with GCSE art & design students from Theale Green, Park House, and Mary Hare secondary schools.
