'SALOME' Shining Lights Theatre Company (see the Residencies page.)
Written by Wilde in 1891, 'Salome' is taken from the New Testament tale of King Herod's infatuation with his stepdaughter, Salome. He promises her anything she desires if she will perform the sexually charged Dance of the Seven Veils for him. However, when she does not demand power or gold, but the head of John the Baptist on a platter, Herod finds himself struggling to break his oath.
Joseph Thorpe played the lecherous Herod opposite Sophie Hicklin as the wickedly naïve Salome. The supporting company all came from the Newbury and Thatcham area, ranging from 13 to 19 years old.
