'TAJ' Company of Angels, in association with UK Arts
The Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World was built by the great Moghul, Shahjahan, as a monument to his love for his Queen, Mumtaz. According to historians of his time, Shahjahan was the great romantic king. Yet behind the pure, white marble lurks a legend of cruelty and brutality. 'Taj' brings to life an opulent period of Islamic history through the eyes of a young Asian woman on a pilgrimage to her past. Yet past meets present as fantasy, philosophy and drama are woven together to explore the eternal conflict between love and death, belief and conscience, knowledge and understanding.
"The combination of fact and fantasy..provides wonderful material for this production as it moves effortlessly from now to then..a powerful stage device, handled in an extremely clever fashion." Penny Brookman, Newbury Weekly News |
