'HAMLET'
One and One

This version aimed to focus solely on the story of Hamlet's 'journey' through the trials and events that lead him to anger, madness and eventually death. With a cast of nine performers, director Pete Watt said, "We want to focus on the people who immediately surround Hamlet, we're looking at the impact they all have on him and his downfall. We have worked on characters such as Claudius, the uncle who kills Hamlet's father and marries the widow, his mother, to become King. We've approached him, knowing he is a very bad person, but asked the question, is he a bad king? And likewise asking whether Hamlet, being a person of virtue, would therefore be a good king. The most important line the play for me is the opening line, 'Who's there?' which, I feel raises the central question as to whether anybody in the play is being who they really are."

Although there has been a great deal of study over many years on Hamlet, Pete felt that, "many people have forgotten that it's also a really great story." The company have held fast to this idea throughout the preparation and have allowed all the themes like lust, madness, disguise, revenge and the Oedipus complex to come through.
