Digital paintings and small sculptural works by Indian artist SUDHIR DESHPANDE
This was Sudhir's first exhibition in the UK consisting of a variety of images printed onto canvas and paper and a number of small sculptural works. The digital images represented a move away from his better known work as producer of large scale sculptural works, but reflected his desire to experiment with different media and to use whatever material comes to hand: "An artist working in marble would do nothing if marble is not available. I do not want to sit idle; I use whatever is available," explained Sudhir.
Scrap is his media, the fusing of disparate ideas and materials his intent, the ideas informed by an odd and compelling mix of ancient Indian culture and modern abstract imagery. His best-known sculptural piece - The Powerful - personifies this approach. Designed as a living symbol of power, it was entered into the 1992 Guinness Book of Records as the tallest metal sculpture in the world, consisting of a 50' tall, 26 tone figure, made entirely from scrap metal found in the junkyards of the Nashik Thermal Power Plant, where it is sited. Sudhir commented: "Material is immaterial. What is important is the content, the expressions."
