'MEANS OF PRODUCTION' - an exhibition of work by Stephen Riley and Jeremy Turner. The name of the show is both historical and ironic. Whereas discourses once centred on ownership of the means of production, what is now perceived as the important issue is the ownership and control of mass communications, since this contains means by which perception and understanding are shaped. The work of both artists centres on objects which bear a physical relationship to the manufactured world but which under scrutiny become conceptual. As such the work is in a dialogue with both the archaic and the contemporary issues.
"Turner and Riley are talented artists and clever to boot...'Means of Production' focuses on the message and ideas conveyed by material things...However unimportant and insignificant the material, it still has the power to communicate...This is a conceptually difficult but visually powerful show."
