Hundreds expected to see Mozart's classic outdoor opera The Magic Flute at Newbury Racecourse.
Greenham Common Trust is teaming up again with leading opera touring company Opera Brava to present another Mozart classic, 'The Magic Flute', at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday, June 26th.
Following the success of 'The Marriage of Figaro' last year, the Trust has asked Opera Brava to return and perform one of the best loved operas with an international cast of world class singers.
Opera Brava brings Mozart's masterpiece to life superbly in this exciting open air production, sung in English. 'The Magic Flute' is the sixth subsidised opera put on by Greenham Common Trust for the whole family and will be accompanied by a full orchestra. All for just £5 a ticket in advance, unheard of by Covent Garden Royal Opera House standards.
Originally commissioned by the Viennese music-hall impresario Emanuel Schikaneder, Opera Brava's sparkling new production of 'The Magic Flute' will be directed by Michael Gieleta, who has a wealth of experience including credits at the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne. The orchestra is marshalled magnificently under the baton of Jeremy Silver as conductor and musical director.
"The Magic Flute is probably the most life enhancing piece in the repertoire. You don't need to dress up, you don't need to be wealthy. It is audience friendly and an all inclusive experience," said Mr Gieleta.
The Magic Flute will take you on a perilous journey in pursuit of love, light and peace as the prince Tamino, played by tenor Ted Schmitz, is sent by the Queen of the Night (soprano Amanda Buckland) to rescue the Queen's daughter Pamina (soprano Amanda Forbes) from an Egyptian priest, Sarastro (bass Geoffrey Moses). Tamino is joined on his quest by a merry bird-catcher, Papageno, and given a magic golden flute to ward off danger. And with advanced tickets at just £5, there's no excuse to miss this fabulous evening out, enjoying some of the finest music ever composed sung by a cast of world-class singers complete with full orchestra.
Opera Brava artistic director Bronek Pomorski said: "Working with Greenham Common Trust has been a real privilege, as we both share the same vision in making opera available to everybody. 'The Magic Flute' is Mozart's masterpiece as he links both tragedy and comedy together as two young lovers' journey together in their search for truth.
"Bring a picnic and drink in the beautiful surroundings while you watch this magical love story unfold before your eyes."
Greenham Common Trust chief executive Stuart Tagg added: "This is a unique opportunity for the whole family to experience a world class opera for just £5. The Trust wants to give the whole community access to this exciting cultural and musical experience. So if you've never been to an opera before why not come down and enjoy a wonderful evening out."
'The Magic Flute' will once again be held in front of the Grandstand to maximise the acoustic benefits of the venue. As usual you can bring along your picnics, chairs and blankets, and to make the audience as comfortable as possible and enhance your viewing pleasure the Trust will be laying down some artificial grass in front of the stage. There will also be a licensed bar.
Tickets are only £5 in advance and £10 on the gate.
