A £1,000 grant from Greenham Common Trust was used to help with the costs of promotional and education materials, catering, children's entertainment, marquee, security and first aid at a fund raising walk held at the Parasampia Golf and Country Club, Donnington Grove.
It is estimated that some 17,500 people in West Berkshire and North Hampshire suffer from diabetes, and the number of sufferers is increasing. Treatment of the disease costs the National Health Service some £5.2 billion a year nationally. The Newbury walk gave an opportunity for all those with diabetes in the local area, especially children and their families, to meet others in a similar situation and share knowledge and expertise.
As well as being a fun day out, the event helped to raise awareness of diabetes within the local community, as well as bringing in much needed funds to promote and advance medical research.
