2007 Thatcham Allotment
Gardening Club
a community notice board
back to 2007 awards

£203 was given to the Thatcham Allotment Gardening Club for the erection of a new noticeboard at the Henley Allotments in Thatcham.

The aim of the Gardening Club is to assist all members in the pursuit of gardening as a healthy and recreational activity, promoting education and community action and reducing food miles and carbon emissions. Family and friends also benefit from fresh, local (organic in most cases) produce. The allotments are owned by Thatcham Town Council and managed by Thatcham Allotment Gardening Club and are the only allotment site in Thatcham which has a population of 24,000+. At the time of the grant application there were 108 plots, all occupied (such is the popularity of allotments) and worked by over 250 people.

The board will improve communications on site and enable notices and community information to be posted. Information will include notices from the allotment committee and Thatcham Town Council and also allotment members. This will promote the dissemination of information, community social events and also encourage sharing of tools, equipment and exchange of plants, seeds and excess produce. etc. Before the erection of the noticeboard notices were tied to the gate and at the mercy of the elements.
